The Aircraft

The DH Dragon Rapide first flew on the 17th April 1934 from the de Havilland factory at Hatfield in Hertfordshire. The original Dragon was designed to a requirement from Hillman Airlines for an aircraft that could carry six passengers and luggage from London to Paris in some comfort. Such was the safety of its design that it became the first aircraft to carry a reigning British Monarch. Over 600 were used during war years as training and communications aircraft. In the 1940s these were used by scores of airlines.

Today, though, only a handful Rapides are flying. The DH Dragon Rapide remains one of the best-loved pre-war aircraft. The aircraft Delta Aviation fly are two of the very few left flying and are completely restored to comply with modern regulations.

Oxford:

The historic aeroplane will be based for the summer at Oxford’s Kidlington airport, just a short journey from the city centre. For visitors and locals alike the flight is the stuff of dreams, with elegant tapered wings framing views of famous landmarks, including the Bodleian Library and the Oxford colleges as well as Blenheim Palace - one of the UK's finest stately homes.

Cambridge:

Taking off from Duxford, the Dragon Rapide flies north at 1500 feet giving you the finest possible views over the local countryside. First the ancient city of Cambridge will appear beneath the biplane's silver wings; see the pinnacles of King's College Chapel, the courtyards of Trinity and St. John's, and the River Cam as it flows through the gardens and water meadows of the University. Then you will fly on to the mighty Romanesque Cathedral at Ely and the famous racetrack at Newmarket.

London:

Taking off from Duxford, your aircraft flies gently south towards London and its famous skyline. The large windows at every seat offer superb views of a modern city framed between silver wings and their bracing wires and struts, emphasizing the grace and nostalgia of this lovely aircraft.

What do customers think?
"...I cannot sing the praise of this day more. It was a fantastic day out and everyone who came along said it was one of the best days out they had had in a long time. The setting for the experience was lovely; it was a beautiful setting and really made the day as you could wait for your flight in comfort. The flight itself was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The people who took part loved it and I know I would go back again anytime. I will be recommending this as a great gift to all my friends. Thank you so much." Lisa, Bedfordshire.

“….I am still at 2000 feet and planning the next flight. It was not just me but the whole family who were made to feel special so thanks for that as well.” Tom, Thames Valley.

“…I feel I must thank you and indeed your staff for a truly wonderful experience. I was talked through before hand and also whilst in the air. I was made to feel very comfortable and at ease.”
